Our staff in North Carolina highlights the importance of providing autism ABA therapy services in the area
ABS Kids opened a new ABA therapy center in Concord, North Carolina, the second center in the city providing services to autistic children and their families.
The Independent Tribune understood the need for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) services in the area – the latest CDC study in the state showed higher rates of autism diagnoses in North Carolina – and featured the new center in this March story.
The story noted, “ABS Kids provides the children with applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy, which is a one-on-one play-based treatment, with a focus on increasing desirable behavior and decreasing undesirable behavior. ABA helps children become stronger in a variety of skill-based areas, including communication, cognitive learning, social skills and daily living skills, to help increase their quality of life.”
ABS Kids North Carolina Regional Vice President Allyssa Leary was interviewed for the article.
“So for example, you have a child that hits when you take the iPad away,” Leary said. “Our goal is to teach that child how to communicate what they want without hitting.”
ABA Services Director for the center, Macy Vanderburg, was also interviewed. She discussed individualized treatment plans to promote quality of life.
“Essentially we really want to meet that kid where they’re at,” Vanderburg said, noting a treatment plan is developed for each child. “Our goal is really to put them in the least restrictive environment to get them on par with their typically developing peers and promote their top quality of life, whether that be in school, or their family life.”
